Precious is Their Blood in His Sight (Psalm 72)

Tuesday's full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 16:1-17:20 ~ Luke 9:7-27 ~ Psalm 72:1-20 ~ Proverbs 12:8-9

Psalm 72 is a psalm either by Solomon or for Solomon by his father, King David. As a whole, it is a psalm asking for the Lords blessing on heirs of David's line. Specifically, this psalm speaks to the need for justice and wisdom in ruling the people of God, Israel.

We can glean much of God's heart and character in governing simply by noting verse 12-14.

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.

13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.

14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.

Psalm 72:12-14

Today, as an act of worship, speak up for those who are otherwise powerless to do so. God loves them just as much as he loves you and me.

Declare His Power to the Next Generation (Psalm 71)

Monday, March 30th, full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 13:1-15:23 ~ Luke 8:40-9:6 ~ Psalm 71:1-24 ~ Proverbs 12:5-7

The last ten verses of Psalm 71 strike me as one of the most refreshing "senior adult" prayers I have ever witnessed.

The longer I live the more I experience, and the more I realize I still have to learn. I can remember sitting on a porch swing with my grandfather for hours and hours listening to stories of his life experiences. Each one was more fascinating than the one before. Not until now am I beginning to truly appreciate the time and effort he put into recounting those memories to me.

16 I will come and proclaim your mighty acts, O Sovereign LORD;
I will proclaim your righteousness, yours alone.

17 Since my youth, O God, you have taught me,
and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.

18 Even when I am old and gray,
do not forsake me, O God,
till I declare your power to the next generation,
your might to all who are to come.

Psalm 71:16-18

Today, as an act of worship, recount what the Lord has done for you. Share your stories with someone specifically; only time will tell the true impact your legacy will leave.

"Give yourself to His word and gospel and calling, and you will find His story is remarkable. Your story will become a novel and it will be an amazing read."

Come Quickly to Help Me (Psalm 70)

Sunday, March 29th, full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 11:1-12:32 ~ Luke 8:22-39 ~ Psalm 70:1-5 ~ Proverbs 12:4

If there was ever a quick desperate outcry for the deliverance of the Lord it is found neatly sealed in the five short verses of Psalm 70. Here are those verses in their entirety...
1 Hasten, O God, to save me;
O LORD, come quickly to help me.

2 May those who seek my life
be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.

3 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
turn back because of their shame.

4 But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation always say,
"Let God be exalted!"

5 Yet I am poor and needy;
come quickly to me, O God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O LORD, do not delay.

Psalm 70

It has been wisely said that we live in and live with the Psalms. As I read these words I find myself identifying more and more with the plight of their God-inspired human author. He was powerless on his own and yet mustered the faith to seek the Lord's protection.

O, how we should do the same!

Today, as an act of worship, call upon the Lord. No matter what you are going through He is more than enough. Remember: the more hopeless it seems the more glorious His appearing will be!

More Than An Ox (Psalm 69 - Part 2 of 2)

Saturday, March 28th, full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 9:1-10:22 ~ Luke 8:4-21 ~ Psalm 69:19-36 ~ Proverbs 12:2-3

The later part of Psalm 69 makes a strong point for every believer who desires to bring authentic worship to the LORD. God is more interested in our heart and attitude than our stuff.

30 I will praise God's name in song
and glorify him with thanksgiving.

31 This will please the LORD more than an ox,
more than a bull with its horns and hoofs.

Psalm 69:30-31

It is easier said than applied and believed. Humanity seems to prefer having a checklist of things to do and not-to-do. We easily gravitate toward legalism, missing the whole change of heart thing. Frankly, it is easier to go through the motions of worshiping God, than to actually worship God!

Today, as an act of worship, take time to offer God sincere gratitude and praise. He is SO worthy!

When I get to heaven and truly behold the one whom I have worshiped all these years, I'll probably say to myself, "I should have thought bigger!"

For Others (Psalm 69 - Part 1 of 2)

Friday, March 27, full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 7:1-8:20 ~ Luke 7:36-8:3 ~ Psalm 69:1-18 ~ Proverbs 12:1

Psalm 69 inspires me to be mindful of others, especially how my sin affects others. Notice how, in the following verses, the worshiper intercedes for the well being of others even when he is faced with the reality of his own sin.

5 You know my folly, O God;
my guilt is not hidden from you.

6 May those who hope in you
not be disgraced because of me,
O Lord, the LORD Almighty;
may those who seek you
not be put to shame because of me,
O God of Israel.

7 For I endure scorn for your sake,
and shame covers my face.

8 I am a stranger to my brothers,
an alien to my own mother's sons;

9 for zeal for your house consumes me,
and the insults of those who insult you fall on me.

Psalm 69:5-9

Today, as an act of worship, be honest with yourself and the Lord over the effects of sin in your life. Intercede for those closest to you - that they may be spared the painful repercussions of your failures.

Three Days in One Post (March 24-26)

Thursday, March 26
A GOD WHO SAVES (Psalm 68 - Part 2 of 2)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 5:1-6:25 ~ Luke 7:11-35 ~ Psalm 68:19-35 ~ Proverbs 11:29-31

Chris Tomlin uses the opening phrase of Psalm 68:20 in the prechorus and bridge of his song "Let God Arise".
It says, "Our God is a God who saves!"

In recent days, this statement has become a heart-anthem for me. There is no one too far gone for God.

We serve an amazing God, and He has a mission and purpose for our lives. We need to see our lives as playing a part - a small part - but a real part in the story of God saving His rebellious "prone to wander" creation.

Today, as an act of worship, ask God for His vision; try to see the world the way He sees it. Who is God calling out to in your sphere of influence today? Remember, "our God is a God who saves!"

Wednesday March 25
LET GOD ARISE (Psalm 68 - Part 1 of 2)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 4:1-49 ~ Luke 6:39-7:10 ~ Psalm 68:1-18 ~ Proverbs 11:28

Psalm 68 begins with a proclamation of judgment on the enemies of God. It is a harsh reality, but an absolutely perfect one!

Who can rightly stand in opposition to the Creator and Sustainer of all? We live in a world of "entitlements", yet we are really entitled to nothing at all. Left to ourselves, we deserve nothing but damnation - to be eternally condemned for our sinful rebellion.

The beauty of it all is that "He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities." (Ps 103:9-10) God is merciful and has made a way for us to be made righteous and whole. For this, we have much to thankful - to celebrate with GREAT JOY!!

 1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered;
may his foes flee before him.

2 As smoke is blown away by the wind,
may you blow them away;
as wax melts before the fire,
may the wicked perish before God.

3 But may the righteous be glad
and rejoice before God;
may they be happy and joyful.

4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol him who rides on the clouds
—his name is the LORD—
and rejoice before him.
(Psalm 68:1-4)

Today, as an act of worship, put a smile on your face and recall the mercy and grace of God in your life. As you express your thankfulness, take a moment and intercede for those who remain in a state of condemnation.

KNOWN AMONG ALL NATIONS (Psalm 67)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Deuteronomy 2:1-3:29 ~ Luke 6:12-38 ~ Psalm 67:1-7 ~ Proverbs 11:27

The opening verses of Psalm 67 reveal our need for God to do His work to us and through us. Without the indwelling of God's Spirit molding and shaping our very thoughts and attitudes, we will fail to be involved in the nations turning to Christ.

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us,

2 that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

3 May the peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you.
(Psalm 67:1-3)

Today, as an act of worship, may we surrender ourselves fully to God that He be glorified in bringing the nations to Himself through us. Hold nothing back!

Cherishing Sin (Psalm 66)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 36:1-Deut. 1:46 ~ Luke 5:29-6:11 ~ Psalm 66:1-20 ~ Proverbs 11:24-26

Psalm 66 is an amazing exhortation to "make His praise glorious"! It is a fresh reminder for me to continually honor the Lord with my words, thoughts, and actions.

16 Come and listen, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened;
19 but God has surely listened
and heard my voice in prayer.
20 Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!
(Psalm 66:16-20)

It is particularly striking to me how the psalmist exemplifies telling the story of God. "Come and listen...let me tell you what he has done for me." We have much to learn from this simple statement - tell someone what God has done for you!

The psalmist continues with a sobering lyric about the repercussions of "cherishing sin". Sin is sticky; it's temporarily fulfilling, addictive, and totally destructive!  But, if our worship is to be of any value to the Lord and to us, we must break free of sin; there must not be any secret cherishing of evil in our hearts.

Today, as an act of worship, repent of every known sin in your life. Be made clean by His forgiveness and your repentance. Now, tell someone what God has done for you!

As Morning Dawns and Evening Fades (Psalm 65)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 33:40-35:34 ~ Luke 5:12-28 ~ Psalm 65:1-13 ~ Proverbs 11:23

In Psalm 65 the worshiper proclaims the wonders of God as he is vividly reminded that our only hope of forgiveness is found in God.

1 Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion;
to you our vows will be fulfilled.

2 O you who hear prayer,
to you all men will come.

3 When we were overwhelmed by sins,
you forgave our transgressions.

5 You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness,
O God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas,

8 Those living far away fear your wonders;
where morning dawns and evening fades
you call forth songs of joy.

Psalm 65:1-3, 5, 8

Today, as an act of worship, respond to the calling and leading of God, through the Holy Spirit, by offering joyful songs to the Lord. He is to be HIGHLY EXALTED among us!

Here's a great song of worship that proclaims verse 8, "Your Name", from Phillips, Craig, and Dean.

Complaining (Psalm 64)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 32:1-33:39 ~ Luke 4:31-5:11 ~ Psalm 64:1-10 ~ Proverbs 11:22

Psalm 64 begins with, "Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint..." This should immediately silence the common thought that all complaining is sinful; it clearly is not! In fact, there is an acceptable form of complaining which is demonstrated even in worship - speaking out against injustice and wickedness.

As if this simple truth weren't enough to ponder, the conclusion of Psalm 64 sheds even more light by reminding the worshiper that "All mankind will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done." (64:9)

God will respond to prayers and "complaints" of His people provided that they are offered in a way that is according to His character and will.

Today, as an act of worship, "Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him; let all the upright in heart praise him!" (Psalm 64:10)

Better Than Life (Psalm 63)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 30:1-31:54 ~ Luke 4:1-30 ~ Psalm 63:1-11 ~ Proverbs 11:20-21

Psalm 63 echos the heart of a worshiper resounding from the parched landscape of a weary land saying, "my soul thirsts for You, my body longs for You." (63:1) Especially when it seems that all is lost and we have nothing left with nowhere else to turn, I am comforted in knowing that the love of God is better than life itself. He is more than enough for me.

"1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.  2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.  3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.  5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you." (Psalm 63:1-5)

Today, as an act of worship, may these words be true of us. May we earnestly seek...thirst...long...see...behold...praise...lift up...and be completely satisfied in the love of God - Jesus Christ!

The Ministry of Songs ABOUT God (Psalm 62)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 28:16-29:40 ~ Luke 3:23-38 ~ Psalm 62:1-12 ~ Proverbs 11:18-19

Psalm 62 is a great help to worshiper as it add perspective and encouragement to the heart of the individual. While some worship songs are written TO God, others are written ABOUT God. They contribute greatly to the affirmation of the worshiper and help to motivate them to carry on.

Psalm 62 is just such an example saying, "Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8)

Today, as an act of worship, find rest in God alone. Remind yourself of His wonderful attributes. Worship in His presence!

LONGING (Psalm 61)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 26:52-28:15 ~ Luke 3:1-22 ~ Psalm 61:1-8 ~ Proverbs 11:16-17

Psalm 61 reveals what I think is an extremely important motive in David heart and sets him apart from worshiping believers. I suppose you don't get the title of, "Man after God's own heart" without it.

In verse four David writes, "I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings." (Psalm 61:4)

It is significant to note that David had an deep longing for God in his heart. He desired God above all else. To him, there was nothing more satisfying than being with and honoring the Lord.

Today, as an act of worship, gauge your own heart for God. Do you truly desire Him more than anything else? Are driven by a longing for His very presence? Draw near to Him in worship today!

The Last Five Days in One Post(Psalms 56-60)

Tuesday, March 17
"THE HELP OF MAN IS WORTHLESS (Psalm 60)"

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 26:1-51 ~ Luke 2:36-52 ~ Psalm 60:1-12 ~ Proverbs 11:15

Psalm 60 ends with a reminder that without God's help and favor we are doomed. The psalmist, David, says it this way...

"Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies." (Psalm 60:11-12)

Today, as an act of worship, live with an utter dependence on God. Do not make God your last resort; turn to Him first.

Monday, March 16
"HE IS OUR LOVING GOD (Psalm 59)"

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 24:1-25:18 ~ Luke 2:1-35 ~ Psalm 59:1-17 ~ Proverbs 11:14

Psalm 59 is the heart cry and expression of worship that David offered to God when Saul had sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. It is an amazing psalm in that it is so "real". There are many painful emotions we experience in life and David experienced many of those just like you and me - often leaving us a good example to follow.

He concludes the psalm with these words...

"But I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. O my Strength, I sing praise to You; You, O God, are my fortress, my loving God. (Psalm 59:16-17)

Today, as an act of worship, rest in knowing that the Lord is able to judge and act according to His desires and purposes. He is our strength, fortress, and refuge. And above all, He is our LOVING God!

Sunday, March 15
"JUDGMENT AND GRACE (Psalm 58)"

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 22:21-23:30 ~ Luke 1:57-80 ~ Psalm 58:1-11 ~ Proverbs 11:12-13

Psalm 58 presents the proclamation of judgment on the wicked in a vivid way and ultimately concluding that "the righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked." (Ps 58:10)

In-and-of-itself, bathing anything in blood sounds morbid and grotesque, but the simple fact remains that judgment is coming and we are all under the judgment of God. The Earth is the Lord's, including our very lives (Ps 24), and we are accountable for the choices and decisions we make (Matt 12:36-37 & Heb 4:13). That being the case, we must lead lives that are fully obedient to the Word of God.

Although, God's ultimate judgment is a simple reality, and sin has very real and tangible consequences, we currently live under the grace of God given to us by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Grace flows to us and is seen everywhere through the amazing blessings of life: the air we breath, the weather we experience, the food we eat, the relationships we maintain, and the material possessions we enjoy.

But, in the midst of countless blessings, the judgments of God also shine forth spreading the message of God's Holiness and man's sinfulness so that...

"Then men will say, 'Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.'" (Psalm 58:11)

Today, as an act of worship, thank God for revealing His character of absolute holiness and integrity in all things. Honor Him through your lifestyle.

Saturday, March 14
"PRAISE YOU IN THE STORM (Psalm 57)"

Full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 21:1-22:20 ~ Luke 1:26-56 ~ Psalm 57:1-11 ~ Proverbs 11:9-11

In Psalm 57 David writes some incredible words of praise to God while he was in the thick of battle. He had fled from Saul and was hiding in a cave and yet he was fully trusting in God. The first verse reminds us that David was in fact taking refuge in God.

"For in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed." (Psalm 57:1)

Although, humanly speaking, he had much to fear, he embodied such a bold faith in God that he did not fear what man would or could do.

"7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.  8 Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.  9 I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples.  10 For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. 11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth" (Psalm 57:7-11)

Today, as an act of worship, praise God in the midst of your storm. No matter what you may face today, resolve to trust the LORD fully and remain committed to do His will. Praise and worship Him!

Friday, March 13
"WHEN I AM AFRAID, I WILL TRUST IN YOU (Psalm 56)"

Full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 19:1-20:29 ~ Luke 1:1-25 ~ Psalm 56:1-13 ~ Proverbs 11:8

Psalm 56 highlights David's response to the natural fear of being surrounded by many enemies. David really was a man after God's own heart (1 Sam 13:14 & Acts 13:22). He loved God and demonstrated it by trusting God over and over.

"When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?" (Psalm 56:3-4)

It is refreshing to hear the words "In God I trust" sincerely spoken! At some point in American history we adopted the slogan "In God We Trust" to be displayed on our currency, and although it remains there to this day it has become increasingly more obvious that our nation as a whole does not legitimately subscribe to it. Authentic trust implies faithful actions as supporting evidence.

An important take-a-way for us is the rhetorical question David asks in verse four, "what can mortal man do to me?" And, of course, the answer is: man may be given physical power over your body, but he remains totally powerless over your soul.

Today, as an act of worship, remember the ultimate limitations of mere mortals and consider the reality that God has the power to save the soul. Praise Him!

Betrayal and Being Thankful (Psalm 55)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 16:41-18:32 ~ Mark 16:1-20 ~ Psalm 55:1-23 ~ Proverbs 11:7

Psalm 55 is a personal lament where the worshiper cries out to the Lord for rescue and help after dealing with the betrayal of a close friend and companion. Something to keep in mind is that although this psalm was written by or about King David, it is not necessarily autobiographical - speaking of specific people, places, and situations.

The Biblical Psalms are hymns written to facilitate genuine worship from a variety of life situations. We are commanded to be thankful in all circumstances, yet the isolation of betrayal is a most painful and lonely place in which to offer our thanks.

1 Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea;

2 hear me and answer me.
My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught

12 If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it;
if a foe were raising himself against me,
I could hide from him.

13 But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,

14 with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship
as we walked with the throng at the house of God.

22 Cast your cares on the LORD
and he will sustain you;
he will never let the righteous fall.

23 But you, O God, will bring down the wicked
into the pit of corruption;
bloodthirsty and deceitful men
will not live out half their days.
But as for me, I trust in you.

Psalm 55:1-2, 12-14, 22-23

Betrayal is not an isolated event but is widespread and something that most of us will experience. It is encouraging to know that Jesus can identify with this bitter reality of life. Today, as an act of worship, be thankful for even the painful and difficult situations you experience. Pray especially for those who are in the midst of betrayal right now - that they might become better, not bitter.

Mighty To Save - Hillsong (Psalm 54)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 15:17-16:40 ~ Mark 15:1-47 ~ Psalm 54:1-7 ~ Proverbs 11:5-6

Psalm 54 is a powerful expression of God-centered salvation. The worshiper is reminded how David was betrayed and persecuted by the Ziphites, yet he called upon God to save him. This Psalm is especially suited for worship in the persecuted church, but even those not experiencing physical persecution can be drawn into a greater love of God by identifying with the work of God on behalf of those who suffer daily for the Gospel!

1 Save me, O God, by your name;
vindicate me by your might.

2 Hear my prayer, O God;
listen to the words of my mouth.

3 Strangers are attacking me;
ruthless men seek my life—
men without regard for God.
Selah

4 Surely God is my help;
the Lord is the one who sustains me.

5 Let evil recoil on those who slander me;
in your faithfulness destroy them.

6 I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you;
I will praise your name, O LORD,
for it is good.

7 For he has delivered me from all my troubles,
and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

Psalm 54

Today, as an act of worship, turn to the LORD for salvation and rescue from your enemies. Pray for those who are being persecuted for the Gospel. Pray that they will be bold in their witness no matter what earthly price they are forced to pay. Pray in faith and remember He is "Mighty to Save".

Enjoy the song "Mighty To Save" as you worship today!

The Fool Says, "There is No God!" (Psalm 53)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 14:1-15:16 ~ Mark 14:53-72 ~ Psalm 53:1-6 ~ Proverbs 11:4

Psalm 53 is a perhaps a revised version of Psalm 14 and is also heavily quoted by Paul in Romans 3. The significance for the worshiper is the reality that we live in a world filled with sin and rebellion and we need a Savior. Far to often man fails to turn to the LORD for help, forgiveness, compassion, mercy, direction, and purpose; instead he chooses a life of self indulgence.

1 The fool says in his heart,
"There is no God."
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven
on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.

3 Everyone has turned away,
they have together become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

Psalm 53:1-3

I also wrote about this back on January 16, 2009 when we read Psalm 14. I believe it sheds light on this passage as well.

Today, as an act of worship, spend time acknowledging your need for God. He is present and desires that we know Him personally.

Trust in God's Unfailing Love (Psalm 52)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 11:24-13:33 ~ Mark 14:22-52 ~ Psalm 52:1-9 ~ Proverbs 11:1-3

Psalm 52 was written concerning a most tragic situation in the history of the nation of Israel. Unlike today, where American have witnessed the peaceful transition of power over and over, Israel was experiencing a most unfortunate chapter of history as Saul, the reigning King, grew increasingly jealous of His son-in-law's growing popularity. He was so enraged with jealousy that he sought to kill David by any means. His rage and madness blinded him to the obvious blessings of God. Many innocent people suffered and died as a result. (see 1 Samuel 21:1-7, 22:9-19)

David, however, in the midst of this conflict remained faithful to the LORD and reminds us today to do likewise.

8 But I am like an olive tree
flourishing in the house of God;
I trust in God's unfailing love
for ever and ever.

9 I will praise you forever for what you have done;
in your name I will hope, for your name is good.
I will praise you in the presence of your saints.

Psalm 52:8-9

Today, as an act of worship, trust God to supply your every need. Do not give in to the temptation to trust in yourself "for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose." (Philippians 2:13)

The Way Out (Psalm 51)

Today's One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 10:1-11:23 ~ Mark 14:1-21 ~ Psalm 51:1-19 ~ Proverbs 10:31-32

Psalm 51 shines light on the path out of darkness - a path each of us travel at one time or another. This psalm was written in the context of King David's battle with the sins of pride, adultery, and murder. Regardless of the particular sins you struggle with, the path out is still the same - honest confession and repentance.

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

Psalm 51:9-13

Today, as an act of worship, turn away from all willful sins and trust Christ to provide for your needs. He is more than enough.

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Here's a great song called "Restore To Me" from the Glory Revealed project. (I'm not so sure about the video - but it looks interesting.)

Sacrifices and Gratitude (Psalm 50)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 8:1-9:23 ~ Mark 13:14-37 ~ Psalm 50:1-23 ~ Proverbs 10:29-30

In Psalm 50 the worshiper is reminded through the rebuke of the LORD that it is right and pleasing to offer God sacrifices and burnt offerings (verse 8). Yet, it is not because God is in need of anything (verses 9-13). Our offerings should be offered out of deep and sincere gratitude.

14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God,
fulfill your vows to the Most High,

15 and call upon me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

Psalm 50:14-15

He says this, of course, to those who honor the Lord and worship Him; but, to the wicked, His rebuke is clear and heavy - "What right have you to recite my laws...you hate my instruction ...you join thieves and adulterers...you use your mouth for evil...you speak continually against your own brother...these things you have done and I kept silent; you thought I was altogether like you. But I will rebuke you and accuse you to your face. (see verses 16-21)

Clearly, God is the Judge of the universe. Those who find themselves in opposition to Him have no excuses. They (we) are sin-stained to the core and can only be forgiven by the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ - whose sacrifice is fully able to take away the sin of the entire world.

Along those lines, the Psalm ends with a powerful reminder that God will reveal His salvation to those who honor Him. Today, as an act of worship, honor God with your offerings. God desires that we leverage our earthly resources to magnify His glory and advance His kingdom.

22 "Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with none to rescue:

23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me,
and he prepares the way
so that I may show him the salvation of God."

Psalm 50:22-23

Who Are You Trusting In? (Psalm 49)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 6:1-7:89 ~ Mark 12:38-13:13 ~ Psalm 49:1-20 ~ Proverbs 10:27-28

Psalm 49 describes the life and fate of those who place their trust in themselves and the things of this world. It is a riveting and devastating picture to imagine. The world, especially the western world, is on a hunt - searching for significance - and totally consumed with fame, riches, and pleasure. The reality of this sad commentary is that life is totally pointless, meaningless, and worthless aside from the glory of Jesus Christ. The things of this world will not endure.

12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure;
he is like the beasts that perish.

13
This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
and of their followers, who approve their sayings.

Psalm 49:12-13

Today, as an act of worship, give honor to Jesus Christ through your lifestyle - your work, play, and relationships. Keep eternity in your gaze.

This God He Is Our God - Tommy Walker (Psalm 48)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 4:1-5:31 ~ Mark 12:18-37 ~ Psalm 48:1-14 ~ Proverbs 10:26

Psalm 48 speaks of God enthroned in His holy city on His holy mountain. During this special time before Jesus Christ came to earth, God chose to reveal Himself through and in behalf of His special people, the children of Israel. It was in the temple, His sanctuary, that His people drew closest to Him.

9 Within your temple, O God,
we meditate on your unfailing love.

10 Like your name, O God,
your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
your right hand is filled with righteousness.

14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
he will be our guide even to the end.

Psalm 48:9-10, 14

Today, as an act of worship, reflect on the many ways God chooses to reveal Himself in our day - through Jesus Christ, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit. Thank Him for offering us such sweet assurance.

Verse 14 reminds me of this great worship song from Tommy Walker, "This God He Is Our God".

Worship Transitions (Psalm 47)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Numbers 2:1-3:51 ~ Mark 11:27-12:17 ~ Psalm 47:1-9 ~ Proverbs 10:24-25

The first two verses of Psalm 47 have been some of the most useful phrases for me as a worship leader.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
shout to God with cries of joy.
2 How awesome is the LORD Most High,
the great King over all the earth!
Palm 47:1-2

I remember many years ago, when I was first attempting to lead others in worship, I quickly discovered that transitioning between songs or transitioning between various elements of a worship service could make or break the feel of corporate worship.

Speaking from experience, those who lead in worship often struggle with what to say or do between songs. We have often felt the pressure to say something "profound". It is at this point that I've never been more thankful for the Word of God! There is no better place to lead from than God's Word - the Bible! I highly recommend reading, or better still, quoting scripture that is related to the message of the song or sermon of the service or Bible study you are leading in.

Today, as an act of worship, (even if you are not a "worship leader") consider your use of the scriptures in personal and corporate worship. The more of God's Word you put in your heart the more the Holy Spirit is able to teach you through it as you sing His praises in worship and as you honor Him through your daily work!

My "Ever-Present" Help (Psalm 46)

Today's full One Year Bible reading:
Leviticus 27:14-Numbers 1:54 ~ Mark 11:1-26 ~ Psalm 46:1-11 ~ Proverbs 10:23

Psalm 46 puts into words the powerful reminder that God is our "ever-present" help, refuge, and strength! He goes with us - even through the most painful and gut-wrenching circumstances imaginable. The psalmist put it this way...

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."
11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46:1-3,10-11

Today, as an act of worship, be still before the LORD, and trust Him. God is near - closer than you may realize, and more present than you perceive.

"The LORD Almighty is with us." (vs. 11)

In Behalf of Truth, Humility, and Righteousness (Psalm 45)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Leviticus 25:47-27:13 ~ Mark 10:32-52 ~ Psalm 45:1-17 ~ Proverbs 10:22

As I began to read
Psalm 45, I was curious and yet puzzled by what I thought I might find. A psalm written for the king's wedding seemed to me like a pretty exclusive and narrow opportunity for corporate worship. However, regardless of it's corporate usage, Psalm 45 gives us a profound reminder of the responsibilities placed on the king as he governed and on us as we lead our families, churches, and small groups.

"You are the most excellent of men...since God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility, and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds."

Psalm 45:2-4

Today, as an act of worship, remember that God expected the king of Israel to govern and lead in truth, humility, and righteousness, and He expects that of us too!

TRUTH - Do you demonstrate absolute INTEGRITY in your life?

HUMILITY - Are you confident enough in Christ that you do not seek the praise of men? (See John 12:43, Proverbs 27:2 & 27:21)

RIGHTEOUSNESS - Does your lifestyle reflect God's glory? "Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness." (Romans 6:19)

For Your Sake We Face Death (Psalm 44 - Part 2 of 2)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Leviticus 24:1-25:46 ~ Mark 10:13-31 ~ Psalm 44:9-26 ~ Proverbs 10:20-21

As we finish Psalm 44 today, I can't help but notice how the worshiper is crying out to God, and through his pain, he is admitting that although he and his people love God they are still suffering. They are desperately longing for God to bring His rescue!

22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

Psalm 44:22

This verse is quoted by Paul, in the his letter to the Christians at Rome, in the context of describing how nothing can separate us from the love of God. Today it is strikingly clear that Paul is saying even though we face suffering for the cause of Christ - and we will - and even though we face death to further his kingdom - and we will - nothing can separate us from His love!

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:

"For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."

37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:35-39

Today, as an act of worship, embrace this truth and rest assured that no matter what storms may come your way or trials you must face he's promised He'll always see you through!

I just found a pretty cool recording of a medley of two of my favorite worship songs along the lines of suffering and trust, "I Will Sing Praise" and "It is Well With My Soul". The video is from a church in the Philippines so there's a slight foreign accent, but I think that make it even more special to me. And, as with most church recordings, they're not necessarily professionally mixed and produced, but their hearts are definitely in it. Enjoy!
