Spiritual Depression in the Psalms (Psalm 42)

Today's full One Year Bible readings:
Leviticus 19:1-20:21 ~ Mark 8:11-38 ~ Psalm 42:1-11 ~ Proverbs 10:17

Psalm 42 holds a special place in my heart for at least three reasons. For starters, the song "As The Deer" (written in 1984 and based on the opening verse) brings back many great memories of worship services as a teenager.

Secondly, in recent years I have gravitated toward a particular worship CD called, "Glory Revealed: The WORD of God in Worship" and there is a song on the album based on the last verse (also refrain) of the psalm called "Altar of God".

And finally, I listened to and read a sermon last summer by John Piper called "Spiritual Depression in the Psalms" that helped me see what was really being described in Psalm 42.

11 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11

Today, as an act of worship, spend some time reading and meditating on the words of Psalm 42. Remind yourself (over and over if necessary) that you must put your hope in God; nothing else will satisfy.
